Research Material: Original Idea:
The initial idea for the brief to create a creature, was to somehow incorporate a strange deep sea fish I had previously seen on National Geographic. The Barrel-eyes fish has a transparent dome through which its eyeballs are visible - drawing which is not only visually engaging but would be a personal artistic challenge:
Another driving concept was my creature to be a dragon of some sort. But there has been so many representations of dragons, and in order to differentiate mine in a way, I decided its anatomy would be built to function entirely in the darkness of deep underground caves. So using deep sea creatures like the barrel-eyes fish and strange cave creatures seems fitting.
Though in order for my dragon to be able to manoeuvre through the irregular terrains, it would have to be small (about the size of a large dog), but it would also have to fly, climb and grasp on to surfaces. Therefore its wings would have to be incredibly dexterous and so I looked at how fruit bat wings work, as well as how the elongated arms of a sloth and a spider-monkey allow them to hang for a long period of time. In order to sort out the anatomical structure of the dragon, I looked at how a T-Rex balances its torso with a strong tail. While the sharp teeth of a frilled shark and the flickering tongue of a snake give a further unusual look.
I explored the structure through a series of rough sketches and then settled on a design:
